Participants Needed for Palliative Care Pilot Project

Are pain and symptom issues keeping you from meaningful life activities like seeking or holding a job? Now you can do something about it.

A collaboration between the Department of Health & Human Services and the NE Hospice & Palliative Care Partnership through its Pain Initiative to develop and test pain management intervention protocols to overcome pain and symptom barriers to employment. Palliative care is a rapidly-growing medical/social intervention that brings the team-based, holistic, comfort-care expertise of hospice to those who are not terminally ill. Coordination occurs within the healthcare system, DDHHS, VR, DOL, SSA, consumers and other system stakeholders.

A pilot program for Nebraskans with disabilities will select forty people in the Lincoln and beginning January, 2008 in the South Sioux City areas to work with a palliative care teams to address pain and symptom issues. The focus of Palliative Care is to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life. The Palliative care team includes a nurse, social worker, and others to help you to address any physical, psychosocial, and spiritual concerns you may have.

The goal is that all participants in the Palliative Care Pilot Project will benefit from the direct focus on their pain and symptom issues and that some may even be able to re-enter the workforce. Another goal is to broaden the effort to reach many others.
