Suggestions for Employers who Work with Employees on the Autism Spectrum

The ACN (Autism Center of NE) Connections program has developed a list of suggestions for employers who work with people on the Autism Spectrum. While the advice was prepared for that specific group and purpose, it also provides useful information for family members, educators, employers, and others as they interact with individuals with disabilities.

  • Use clear and specific directions – tell the person what to do instead of what not to do.
  • Avoid use of sarcasm, slang, and figures of speech.
  • Use written information, along with verbal communication.
  • Check for understanding by asking the person to demonstrate the task.
  • Provide wait time to help the person think through what is requested.
  • Assign a co-worker as a mentor/buddy.
  • Explain the work schedule, including times for breaks.
  • Provide advance warning for change in job routine or expectations.
  • Identify when to ask for help/clarification and who to ask.
  • Identify what the person is doing well on the job and provide positive feedback.
  • Break down large tasks into smaller steps and allow time for practice.
  • Help prioritize assigned tasks.
  • This advice may be helpful in the workplace, home, school, and community. If you are a person with a disability or someone who supports that person, share these suggestions with others!
